2 - Methodology

Leader: Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI)

Objectives

GLOBE will use different approaches to identify global governance scenarios and trends. The methodological work package will be carried out jointly by all partners under the leadership of IBEI at the outset of the project to define a common working method and common objectives for the mapping exercise of cluster 1. This WP also includes a workshop with all partners to discuss the working methods as well as the objectives and the format of reports and working papers for WPs 3-8. GLOBE will be based on consolidated as well as innovative methods coming from the quantitative and qualitative field of research, including Bayesian statistical analysis, unstructured data analysis, and social network analysis. This WP also aims to innovate in global governance research methodology by benchmarking and exploring the uses of big data mining as well as creating a number of big data-based indices and visualisations. This WP will emphasize combining methodological tools to tailor-make the ideal analytical framework to meet the project’s objectives, focussing in particular on the use and enrichment of existing databases and visualization. The objectives of this work package are to:

  • Develop a common conceptual framework for WPs 3-8
  • Develop a common working method for the whole project
  • Manage and coordinate data gathering methods for all GLOBE partners
  • Integrate and contribute to major databases used in global governance research
  • Advance, expand and add value to existing methodological tools in global governance.

Innovate in global governance research methodology through big data mining, exploration and visualization with regards to institutional features and prominent stakeholders.
